Certificate IV in Aged Care Work (CHC40102)

Nationally Recognised Training

This course has been designed to give participants the knowledge, understanding and practical skills needed to provide services to individuals with complex needs and / or work with older people in a nursing home, hostel or home care environment. Workers may be required to supervise and / or coordinate a limited number of other workers.

The Certificate IV in Aged Care Work consists of the following competencies:

Core Units

CHCAC12C – Provide services to an older person with complex needs

This unit describes the knowledge and skills required by workers to provide services to the older person with complex or special care needs under supervision of a relevant professional. Knowledge includes the physiology and psychology of ageing, role and function of various health professionals, the impact of cultural and individual differences of service plan development and delivery.

CHCAC7C – Plan and monitor service delivery plans

This unit describes the knowledge and skills required by the worker to identify the service needs of the older person and to develop and monitor the service delivery plan. Knowledge includes relevant care needs and strategies related to common health problems associated with ageing, eligibility requirements for accessing services, principles of delegation and supervision, strategies for conducting effective case conferences.

CHCORG5B – Maintain an effective work environment

This unit deals with maintaining and enhancing productive working relationships with groups within and outside the organisation. Knowledge includes effective team management, organisational mission, philosophy. Organisational structure, policies and procedures, legislation relevant to the organisation.

CHCAC6C – Support the older person meet their emotional & psychosocial needs

This unit describes the knowledge and skills required by the worker to support the older person to meet their emotional and psychosocial needs.

CHCOHS401A – Implement and monitor OHS policies and procedures for a workplace

This unit deals with the ability to accurately implement and monitor defined OHS policies and procedures for a workplace or area, within scope of responsibilities. The worker will also be capable of coaching the team in participating and contributing to OHS management issues. The worker will be able to perform duties as a safety committee member or a team leader in an organisation.

CHCCOM3C – Utilise specialist communication skills to build strong relationships

This units deals with the application of specialist workplace communication techniques to build and maintain strong relationships with colleagues and clients, based on respect and trust. Knowledge includes cross cultural communication protocols, crisis intervention theories and models, grief and loss issues.

CHCINF2B – Maintain organisation's information systems

This unit deals with the comprehensive knowledge of collecting, storing and providing accurate and current information to clients. Knowledge includes use of relevant information technology, operational procedures for use of office technology. Relevant organisation policies and guidelines.

CHCCS301A – Work within a legal and ethical framework

This unit deals with the ability to demonstrate knowledge of the specific legal and ethical requirements of the workplace. Knowledge includes an overview of the legal system, types of law, principles underpinning duty of care, rights and responsibilities of clients and workers, importance of ethics in practice.

CHCADMIN3B – Undertake administrative work

This unit deals with the ability to demonstrate a range of administrative functions in the workplace including maintenance of accounts, participation in the budgetary process and operation of a range of office equipment.

CHCCS2C – Deliver and develop client services

This unit deals with meeting the specific needs of a broad range of existing and new clients within a defined framework. Knowledge includes the principles of effective client service delivery, promotion and marketing of services.

CHCGROUP3 – Plan and conduct group activities

This unit deals with the ability to participate in, establish and lead a range of informal and formal groups in a variety of settings. Knowledge includes dynamics of groups, effective communication strategies, group dynamics and stages of change.

 

Electives

CHCAC15A – Provide care support which is responsive to the specific nature of dementia

Provision of support to clients with dementia in a variety of settings including family houses, community day settings and residential care.

CHCCS405A – Work effectively with culturally diverse clients and co-workers

This unit deals with the cultural awareness required for effective communication and cooperation with persons of diverse cultures.

HLTFA1A – Apply basic first aid

This unit deals with the provision of essential First Aid in recognising and responding to an emergency using basic life support measures. The First Aider is expected to provide an initial response where First Aid is required. In this unit it is assumed the First Aider is working under supervision and/or according to established workplace First Aid procedures and policies.
