Working in home and community care

A home care worker provides personal, physical and emotional support to a person living in their own home. Care workers work in private homes and provide in home support with health issues and daily living tasks such as washing, dressing, eating, transport and budgeting. Duties can also include cooking and serving meals, cleaning, wash, iron and perform other household duties.

Supporting consumers to be more independent at home and in the community is the main objective for workers in Home and Community Care. Succeeding in this objective enhances the quality of life of consumers.

Knowledge Skills and Attributes

Aged care workers need:

  • a caring and supportive attitude
  • patience, discretion and a high level of professionalism
  • good communication skills
  • to be physically fit and able to lift heavy objects
  • to be committed to the rights of elderly people

Working Conditions

Care workers work in private homes and community establishments.  They usually require their own transport and receive a kilometre allowance to travel to the clients home. Client support mainly occurs during the week although depending on indivual circumstances, care workers may be required to work evenings, weekends and public holidays and may be required to live on premised

The Home and Community Care Traineeship

The Home and Community Care Traineeship is designed to give you the understanding, knowledge and practical skills needed to work as a Home and Community Care Worker, providing care to the elderly or disabled in their own homes.

Trainees are employed by Health Training Australia and hosted to a suitable host employer for all on-the-job training and work hours. All off-the-job training (training day) is conducted by a Registered Training Organisation.

The traineeship is of 7 – 18 months duration though most trainees complete earlier. The qualification received is nationally recognised and upon successful completion, the trainee will receive the Certificate III in Home and Community Care.
