Working in aged care

An aged care worker provides personal, physical and emotional support to older people who need assistance with daily living. They provide assistance with daily tasks such as showering, shaving , dressing or eating, and often assist with outings and social activities. The level of assistance provided will depend on the ability and health of the client.

Knowledge Skills and Attributes

Aged care workers need:

  • a caring and supportive attitude
  • patience, discretion and a high level of professionalism
  • good communication skills
  • to be physically fit and able to lift heavy objects
  • to be committed to the rights of elderly people

Working conditions

Aged care workers may be required to work evenings, weekends and rostered shifts. Their work may include carrying out some supervised medical task, such as changing dressings or administering medications. An aged care worker also needs to be aware of any changes in their client’s physical and mental health such as increased disconfort, loss of mobility, hearing or loss of sight, signs of depression or anxiety, and report these to their supervisor. They need to also be on the lookout for any safety hazards that may pose risks to themselves, staff and clients

The Aged Care Traineeship

The Aged Care Work Traineeship is designed to give you the understanding, knowledge and practical skills needed to work as an Aged Care Worker, providing care to the elderly or disabled, in a residential aged care facility (nursing home and/or hostel environment).

Trainees are employed by Health Training Australia and hosted to a suitable facility for all on-the-job training and work hours. All off-the-job training (training day) is conducted by our Registered Training Organisation. The traineeship is of 7 – 18 months duration though most trainees complete earlier. The qualification received is nationally recognised and upon successful completion, the trainee will receive the Certificate III in Aged Care Work.
